Understanding PageRankings!

PageRank or PR is how google places a value on the content, strength, and life span of your website. Yes, even your life span is used in your page rank. If you just started a page, it will not rank well for the first year of service unless you are ready to pay for it.

The main page of your site is the most important; it tipically has the highest PageRank your site has to offer. How your website is layed out from the home page will determine how will your website will rank. The flow of you links from page to page, the organization of your content (left to right, top to bottom). The tags used, the way images are titles, the strength of your inbound links are a few aspects of high a PageRank.

Your webmaster should be able to give you your PageRank, or your can obatin it, with free online PageRank tools or a google toolbar.

The goal is obvious, get the PageRank up! The most common method used to increase your PageRank is by utilizing backlinks. This will allow for Google to place a value on your website, granted that your inbound links are creditable. Another great way to improve your PageRank is to add more pages to your site. That means the more the merrier.

Another aspect to take into consideration is the age of your domain, as I mentioned earlier. Some believe it is when you began to list your website on search engines is considered your websites birth date. However, this is not true. The life of the domain is considered by the first time it had been purchased, no matter if you are the first on second owner of the domain name. If the domain existed 2 years before you actually got a hold of it, then that is all part of the domains life span.

Your Google PageRank will determine how hard you have to work at your SEO to get placement on the search engine. A website with a 0 PR will have to work hard to rank well on Google.

Another possible benefit to a high PR is that your domain name becomes valuable and worth selling. It can be compared to flipping houses. You buy a house that is worth little to nothing and you do what is necessary to make it attractive for buyers.

PageRanking is important, but not the tell all of your site as you can do well with a 0 PR. You can be placed well on Yahoo, Bing, and other search engines without the high PageRank.
